As the Euroleague regular season is slowly coming to an end, we can already talk about which teams will have the most realistic chances of lifting the championship trophy over their heads in less than two months.
Real Madrid. The Spanish capital's team has been playing brilliantly all season and has always been in the lead. Facundo Campazzo returned to the team this year after a break of a few years, and Real have two evenly matched squads. Purely in terms of line-up, this is probably the strongest team in the championship. Last year, Real were Euroleague champions, but it was quite a surprise then. This year, it will be more of a surprise if Real fail to do so.
Panathinaikos Athens. This team has returned to the elite. More than ten years ago, it was the one that set the trends in Europe, but the last few years have not been successful for Pao. Last summer, however, the team's management opened its wallet considerably and brought in the charismatic coach Ergin Ataman. These things have borne fruit. Panathinaikos is now only behind Real and, if it doesn't win the championship, it should return to the final four after a long break.
Barcelona. The Catalan team has undergone a major reshuffle in the last year. First of all, Barcelona got rid of its most expensive player, Nikola Mirotic, as well as letting go of coach Šarūnas Jasikević and reshuffling the squad. Despite this, the results have remained quite high. And more recently, Ricky Rubio joined the team. Anyone who knows his abilities understands that he alone can change the course of the championship.
Fenerbahce. We are already used to Anadol Efes of Istanbul being the trendsetter in Turkey. However, it seems that Fenerbahce, the other team from the country's biggest city, has regained the title of the strongest team in the country. Since Šarūnas Jasikevičius took over as coach, the results have jumped very quickly and more and more analysts are saying that Fenerbahce is capable of achieving exceptionally high results. And they are determined to do so this season.
Olympiakos Piraeus. This team had a difficult start to the season, but as the season progressed, they have picked up form. Despite the fact that several key players left Oly in the summer, this team has always been known for its composure and its excellent atmofsera. It wouldn't be too surprising if these Greeks were the dark horse that could seriously hunt for the trophy.
